Boarding Jupiter

On Tuesday, we left Rio and flew to Buenos Aires. The cruise starts on Wednesday, so we flew in a day early to see some of Buenos Aires on our own before joining up with the cruise. We arrived at our hotel in downtown Buenos Aires around 4:30 in the afternoon. Our only plan for the rest of the day was to eat dinner, since it was really too late in the day to do much of anything.

We asked the hotel for a recommendation for dinner (there is no restaurant at the hotel, except for a small breakfast buffet.) We told them we wanted some authentic Argentine food. They sent us to a place just down the street called Museo del Jamon. When we were seated and looking over the menu, we realized we were going to need help, as the menu was completely in Spanish. It was one of those restaurants with a 6 or 7 page menu - lots of items, and we didn't know what anything was. When we told the waiter that we were going to need help, he said, "Oh, English", and took away our menus and returned with the English menus. Much better.

The waiter didn't speak English so when we ordered, we pointed to the item on the menu. Then he looked at the Spanish menu that he was holding to try to find the same item. My order worked out very well, but Joe ordered a shrimp tortilla and instead got a potato and onion omelet. Even though they brought the wrong food to Joe, he still enjoyed his omelet. I had ordered a rotisserie chicken dish and it might just be the best chicken I've ever eaten.

On Wednesday, we were planning to rent bicycles and ride around Buenos Aires in the morning before heading to the cruise ship in the afternoon. Unfortunately the weather did not cooperate, as it rained all day, and so there would be no bike riding. Instead, we headed to the cruise terminal and went through the thousand and one checks that are required on the way to boarding the ship. The name of our Viking ship is Jupiter. We finally boarded the ship and were planning to head to the cafeteria for lunch, but were told that we had to attend a safety presentation first. The safety presentation was short and soon we found ourselves sitting in the familiar World Cafe enjoying a nice lunch. We had met a couple from Salt Lake City, Peter and Jan, on our way to the cruise ship, and they joined us for lunch. We had a nice conversation with them. We look forward to meeting more people as we embark on this adventure.
